Rehoboth Beach Homeowners' Association NEWS FROM THE RBHA September 18, 2007 [Awaiting the Unveiling of Dolphin Statue]
COASTAL CLEANUP On Saturday, September 15, 2007, RBHA hosted its first Coastal Cleanup—an environmental project of DNREC—in downtown Rehoboth Beach. More than 40 participants collected a variety of debris on the beach from Columbia to Prospect Streets, including almost ten thousand cigarette butts! The event was coordinated by Howard Butler with the assistance of Sonja Decker; Judy Mellen and Alan O'Leary helped in the field.. An estimated 250 pounds of litter was removed from the beach and along the Boardwalk.
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT PUBLIC NOTICE The Board of Commissioners adopted a Zoning Code amendment after a Public Hearing at last night’s meeting. The RBHA, which has been advocating passage of such a provision for more than three years, applauded the decision. In March 2007 the RBHA Board of Directors presented a proposal to the Mayor and Commissioners to amend the City Code provisions relating to public notice by the posting of signs of cases before the city’s Board of Adjustment. Previously, in July 2004 the RBHA corresponded with the Board of Adjustment requesting it to recognize the importance of public notice and to enact measures to provide public notice by the posting of signs. The RBHA stressed the usefulness of the procedure and referenced the success of the Planning Commission, which enacted a similar procedure in 2002. It’s worth noting that subsequently the City has enacted the same type of notice requirements in its Tree ordinance (January 2006) and Demolition of Buildings rules (May 2006). The Board of Adjustment declined to enact such provisions in 2004 and most recently tabled the matter at its June 2007 meeting.] DOLPHIN SIGHTING Fay Jacobs, Executive Director of Main Street, was joined by the Mayor several Commissioners, including Commissioners-elect Pat Coluzzi and Stan Mills, as well as State Representative Pete Schwartzkopf and contributing sponsors in the unveiling of the City’s new bronze dolphin statue. The nine foot work of Art is at the Bandstand area on Rehoboth Avenue. Mayor Cooper and artist Ned Silver pulled the cords unveiling the dolphin. Ms Jacobs and the Mayor offered words of appreciation to several hundred attendees. Donors to the project are the Avenue Inn, Sal & Bette Gallo and family, Jack Lingo Realtors, the Kiernan family, Clint Bunting & Hal Dukes of Penny Lane Mall, and Wilmington Trust.
