NEWS FROM THE RBHA

February 27, 2007

[Winter walk on the south end of the Boardwalk]

We're Back!

At the most recent RBHA meeting [the February 23 Board meeting did not meet quorum requirements] action was taken to establish a renewed RBHA e-mail system.  We intend to produce RBHA News e-mails about twice a month.

RBHA Board Meeting

The February 23, 2007 Board meeting (rescheduled from February 13) failed to meet quorum requirements.  Roger Pool, Linda Kauffman, Fritz Hessemer, Marcia Maldeis, and Greg Gause attended.  Sonja & Hoyte Decker, Stan Mills, and Commissioners Ron Paterson and Paul Kuhns were there.  In spite of the lack of Board member attendance, several issues were discussed and action taken.  None required official Board adoption.

Membership renewals continue to come in.  Membership Chair Marcia Maldeis reported there are 327 members and more than $1,200 in contributions.  By-Laws changes are in the works; reducing the size of the Board and other clarifications will be formally conveyed to the general membership in the near future.  Members of the Environment Committee are assisting the City’s Arborist in identifying dead trees on city property.  Plans are also being made for RBHA’s dune planting event.  March 20 is the tentative date.  A “sense of those in attendance” to support SOLA3 (Support Our Lakes) was reached.  SOLA3 will be seeking DNREC help to preserve an easement which surrounds Lake Comegeys at a DelDOT hearing on February 27, 2007.  In addition to renewing the email system, arrangements were made to update the website; administering the Newsletter was also altered.  In the future Stan Mills will manage and produce the Newsletter; Hoyte Decker will coordinate the website and direct the email program.  The Ordinance Committee was asked to examine how sign-posting public notice might be extended to the Board of Adjustments hearing process.  Finally, discussion took place on developing a speaker list for upcoming meetings, including the April 21 General Meeting.

Dog Park

City Commissioner Paul Kuhns recently issued a request for citizen input on the possibility of creating a dog park within the city limits.  His action responds to a citizen request to the Mayor and Commissioners.

Mr. Kuhns says, “the City Manager has asked for and received a preliminary estimate on the cost of construction of a possible facility . . . Prior to moving any further along on this issue, I need your thoughts on the subject.  I believe we must gather as much input from the local citizenry as possible . . . before we move forward on this matter.”

To develop preliminary information Commissioner Kuhns asks the following questions:

1) Do we need a dog run/park(s) within the city limits of Rehoboth Beach?

2) If so, where should it (they) be located? Presently the suggestions are to locate the facilities on public property within the city, possibly in or near existing park areas.

3) Should a dog run/park be a public park paid for by the city's taxpayers or funded by private contributions?

4) In lieu of creating a dog park, should the city relax the restrictions in the off-season for walking leashed dogs on the beach and boardwalk?

You’re invited to address other concerns and ideas.  Please send your comments to pkuhns@cityofrehoboth.com.  Please tell Paul that you read about this in the RBHA News.

Planting Dune Grass

Mark your calendar: 9:00 am, Saturday, March 24, 2007 for the annual dune grass planting event.  We’re concentrating on the south end of the Boardwalk again this year; so meet us at Rodney Street and the Boardwalk.  Bring gloves and a stake to make holes; we’ll provide the grass!

Interaction & Other Stuff

So, we’re back; so what?  What’s on your mind?  What do you want to know?  You tell us and we’ll tell you.  There’s probably a lot going on in this town that we’re not focusing on.  You may know what it is, but maybe we don’t.  Tell us; we’ll try to dig it out.  However, please understand we can’t take on your personal battle.  We deal with issues that have an impact on the community or at least a significant segment of it.  So, reply to this email or send us a note any time, info@rbhomeowners.com.

As we noted above we will be updating the website (www.rbhomeowners.com) soon.  As we did in the past we will post our RBHA News emails; Newsletters will also be placed on the web.  And a reminder you will need a password to enter the Member Area.  It is "memberrb."

Obnoxious

Do you see something obnoxious in this picture?  Well it’s not the new “Days Inn,” as neighbors have tagged the house in the third beach block of Hickman Street.  Actually, it’s the port-a-john that sits squarely on the sidewalk in front of the new structure.  Is this legal?  Are there no restrictions on where these facilities are placed?  Does anyone give a crap??
